Plan Now to Adapt to Corona Virus Safety 

 

Please take care to help contain the spread of the corona virus disease (COVID-19) and follow the recommendations of public health officials in our city, region, and country.  Equip yourself with information from credible, reputable sources.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offer information and frequent updates (here), and the World Health Organization’s (WHO) advice for the public can be found (here).

 

WHY PLAN NOW?  The goal is to both responsibly protect our public health AND keep building the strength of our movement to protect our community, families, and our human rights (also a serious, deadly public health risk).  By being creative and planning ahead, we can maintain our momentum, be well-organized, and give our group and community plenty of notice to adjust plans if needed.  Our community has always faced obstacles and adversity, but when we have been creative and found paths around the obstacles placed in our way by our opponents or by circumstances -- we have made progress and won positive change.

 

PRACTICE EVERYDAY PREVENTION:  You can practice simple everyday prevention.  Review the recommendations from the CDC (here), and the WHO's advice for the public (here).

 

THIS MOMENT IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO CREATE ACTIVIST COMMUNITIES OF CARE:

  • Refrain from mocking or dismissing peoples’ anxiety and precautionary measures.

  • Offer your assistance on specific tasks or needs without judgment (whatever feels best to that particular person).

  • Refrain from buying items that sick/ disabled folks need to survive when they are in short supply.

  • Check-in with isolated or home bound activist friends who may want to join actions in a different way.

  • Some may try to seize this crisis to divide each other based on where we come from, including by scapegoating Asians and Asian Americans.  There is no place for xenophobia or racism in our movement.

  • Take care of yourself.

Opportunities to Take Action: (Once public health concern has passed).

ENCOURAGE SAFETY: By making phone calls, sending texts and letters, or signing letters provided by organizations that you trust are great opportunities to keep the issues that you care about at the forefront of our elected officials.

  

Holding Tradition: (Lower public health concern -- outdoor activities and keeping distance). Lower concentration of people and options for remaining outdoors.

FAMILY GATHERINGS: Spring is here, and although we want to continue celebrating special events like birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, and more, there are a few things to consider. Try to keep your guest list limited to immediate family members only.  Even though many of us live in multi-generational homes; make sure to practice wearing gloves and face masks when spending time with your loved ones, especially those who have upper respiratory conditions, high blood pressure, diabetes, or any other autoimmune deficiency.  For some ideas, please follow this link.

 

If you have to go to the store; DON'T FORGET YOUR GLOVES AND MASK!  Try heading to the store at a time when it’s less busy (for example, early morning or late night).  Cover your mouth and nose with a cloth face covering when going out in public.  Stay at least 6 feet away from others while shopping and in lines.  Disinfect the shopping cart, use disinfecting wipes if available.  Do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth.  If possible, use touch-less payment (pay without touching money, a card, or a keypad), or use hand sanitizer immediately after paying.

 

Stay in Touch: (Health concern = no public gatherings/ at home and online alternatives).

STAY AT HOME & VIRTUAL OPTIONS:  Here is a list of options that people can primarily do from home and online.

  • Window & Door Signs:  Ask people to place signs visibly in their windows or doors. These could be downloadable/ printed-out posters or signs, or the “art-in” ones suggested/described above.

  • Write Letters & Make Phone Calls:  Sometimes there is nothing better than to receive a letter from a loved one or even a call just to hear their voice.

  • Video Chat: If you have a google account, you can use GOOGLE HANGOUTS.  There is also Facebook Video through Messenger.  Both of these services are free!
