Stop the Minutemen in Springfield!

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011
In just a few short weeks, the voters of Springfield, Missouri will be voting on Question 1, an unconstitutional, expensive, discriminatory initative being sponsored by the Minutemen. If passed, the ordinance would require the City of Springfield to go into the business of checking immigration status, and would force every employer in town to run every single employee through a federal work eligibility background check called “E-Verify.”

Not only is the ordinance being sponsored by an extreme anti-immigrant group interested in passing laws that will encourage discrimination in hiring and racial profiling of immigrants in the community, but it is certain to cost local businesses thousands in new administrive fees, and cost taxpayers thousands more inlegal fees and bureaucracy.  What’s worse: a victory in Springfield may encourage anti-immigrant advocates to attempt the same thing in other parts of the state.

We need your help!

Voters will head to the polls on February 7.  Volunteers in St Louis will be phonebanking on Thursday and Friday evenings thoughout January and the first week of February to ask Springfieldians to VOTE NO on this terrible proposition.

Don’t Let it Happen Here!

Friday, December 16th, 2011

It’s hard to believe. Missouri’s legislators won’t return to Jefferson City until January, but 2012’s first anti-immigrant bill has already been filed! If you’ve been following the news from states like Alabama, Georgia, and Arizona you know that anti-immigrant state laws are bad for business, bad for communities, and result in lengthy, taxpayer-funded law suits.

This year, nativist leaders in Missouri and around the country have pledged to make anti-immigrant policies a priority for 2012. But we’re not going to let that happen! Tell your legislator today, that Missourian’s won’t stand for the kind of short-sighted, mean-spirited policies other states have tried.

Click here to send a message to your legislator. Tell them Missouri that instead of passing xenophobic, anti-immigrant legislation like other states, we should work together to make Missouri a more welcoming

It’s Been a Big Year for MIRA – With More to Come!

Monday, December 5th, 2011

It’s been a big year for Missouri’s immigration community. Together, we defeated more than a dozen anti-immigrant bills in Jefferson City, we’vebattled the Minutemen in Springfield, and fought anti-immigrant profiling in St Louis.  We’ve helped local immigrants file for citizenship, and we have worked hard in everything we do to make Missouri a more welcoming and respectful place.

Our work is far from over.  On December 1st, the first anti-immigrant bill of the 2012 legislative session was filed. You’ve been there for us all along, and we need your help again.

Please consider MIRA in your end of year giving. Your contribution is tax deductible, and will be used to help us continue our fight for the rights of Missouri’s immigrant community.

And to show how much we appreciate the support you give us, we have a special gift for you!  The first 40 people to donate $100 or more, or to become monthly sustainers at $10 per month, will recieve a copy of A Nation of Immigrants by John F. Kennedy.
